Multiple sclerosis: neuroimmunology …
Although there appears to be an "autoimmune" charge against myelin and myelin-forming cells in the brain and spinal cord, multiple sclerosis is not a typical autoimmune disease. There is no proven objective antigen, including the myelin proteins that generate experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), an antigen-induced animal model. Multiple sclerosis is an exclusively human disease. It does not arise spontaneously in wild mice or any other animals. Some HLA types are linked with multiple sclerosis, but the mechanism for the connection is unclear. The immune disruption of multiple sclerosis may begin with an inciting event in the periphery or in the main nervous system, followed by expanding, often intermittent, immune attacks against the head and spinal cord. There are surprisingly few links to other autoimmune diseases, except inflammatory bowel disease (both Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis) and possibly thyroid disease. Introduction
I interviewed Kiyoshi Kuromiya in June at his home in Center Metropolis, Philadelphia. Having completed my Ph.D. dissertation on Philadelphia lesbian and gay history at the University of Pennsylvania in , I moved to Maine in to take a position as a history professor, but over the next few years I returned to Philadelphia periodically to conduct additional interviews and do supplementary research while I worked on my book. I had met Kuromiya when I unified ACT UP Philadelphia in the early s. I also had transcribed an interview that Tommi Avicolli Mecca did with Kuromiya in ; which I used for my dissertation; I hope to include an edited version of the Mecca-Kuromiya transcript to this website in the future. Kuromiya told me that he was established as Steve in his early years, but began to use Kiyoshi in Before the taped part of our interview began, he provided me with the following biographical information:

The LGBTIQ* scene in Munich has a long history: as well as being one of the first cities to hold Christopher Lane Day celebrations (the German and Swiss equivalent to Gay Pride), the Munich-based political party Rosa Liste was the first queer and lesbian electoral collective in Europe to obtain up seats on a local council, in the 90s. But much earlier than that even, at the end of the 60s, the Ochsengarten opened here: one of Germany's first leather bars. Its visitors since then contain included Freddie Mercury, who would go there for impromptu birthday celebrations and drag parties. Many LGBTIQ* events and venues were and still are based in the Glockenbachviertel district, though a number of gender non-conforming locations and events can also be found in other areas of Munich.
