I&#;ll be honest &#; some of the rum I&#;ve been drinking lately has been a bit of an eye opener. I never really gave the category much thought, instead focusing on bourbon and rye as my go-to companions. But the more that I&#;ve investigated this Caribbean phenomenon this summer and drop, the more I&#;ve liked it. So now I&#;m working my way through some of the more popular labels, and the Mount Gay Black Barrel is near the top of that list.

History
While the oldest record of the distillery can date advocate to a deed in (which allows it to claim the title of the oldest operating rum distillery in the world), the distillery is named for the much more recent owner Sir John Gay Alleyne, who purchased the facility in and ran it until his death in During his life, Sir John Gay Alleyne served as a member of the Barbados Parliament, in which he was elected Speaker, and was one of the most influential voices to speak out against the practice of slavery.

Taking a page from whisk(e)y’s novel, rum producers are first stage to dabble more in blends without definitive age statements in favor of those with a marketable characteristic such as the barrels in which it’s finished. It makes a lot of sense, really, given that older does not always equal greater in the spirits society. And as rum continues to increase its market share, there will be less aged rum to go around for all of us. Innovation is a good thing here, methinks, and apparently the good folks at Mount Gay agree.
The venerable Bajan rum house’s latest product “Black Barrel” is a blend of aged rums from both pot and column stills, none of which are quantified by percentage or age. What they do emphasize is the fact that the rum is aged in “deeply toasted and charred Bourbon oak barrels”. Given that so many rums are aged in Bourbon barrels, this isn&#;t such a stand-out feature, so I presume they are hanging their hats on the notion of a “heavy” char. Well, it worked for Jim Beam, I suppose.

Mount Gay Distillery, located in Barbados, is one of the oldest distilleries in the world with the earliest proving document being a deed of sale from the 20th of February The original estate was originally formed by William Sandiford. In the mill and distillery were sold to John Sober (the irony) who then asked for help from his friend Sir John Gay (who owned the Nicholas Plantation) to manage the operations. That&#;s how the Mount Male lover rum was born (renamed in after Sir John). You can find the full story on their website.
Mount Queer Black Barrel is a blend of column distillates and double pot distillates which are aged a second day in deeply charred ex-Bourbon barrels and bottled at 43% ABV free of sweeteners. I am unaware of the age of the juice, but by the taste it seems younger than the XO ( years).
On the nose it&#;s creamy, the oak definitely introduce, spices, vanilla, coconut cream, apricot, unripe strawberries and red apples along with some citrus.

Mount Lgbtq+ Black Barrelhas been a long awaited review for a number of reasons: first, because anything fresh from Mount Gay must be reviewed. Second, because the terrific, best-buy Eclipse Black was discontinued. Third because the USVI subsidies are now beginning to take effect and fourth, because Barbados is one of the most modify countries and styles to be threatened by them. I won't even state the horrid new bottle and label (oops)
The recent history was this. An extremely surprising release - the Eclipse Black - at $19 for a full liter of proof rum, with a stronger pot still element, and some evidence of age (in between Eclipse Gold and MGXO) was actually discontinued, to be replaced by a similar "Black" rum, the current "Black Barrel" at a drop proof, in a smaller bottle, with a lesser pot still element, and with no age declaration (NAS) and for a much higher price (just a dollar or two less than MGXO down here). When you are sold less - less - less and less for, urp, more funds something is wrong.
