Talk about an opening scene In the first moments of Camille Vidal-Naquets sensual, superlative gay drama Sauvage, we see lead character, lane hustler Léo (Félix Maritaud, it is a shame that he is so very ugly etc) ostensibly having a routine check-up with his local GP. What starts off as standard soon begins to seem a little, uh, intimate, and, yep, before anyone can say curve over and touch your toes, Léos quack is swiftly wanking the willing patient off. And just as youre regretting that this isnt a service offered by our precious old NHS, it becomes clear that Léo is a rent boy, the docs surgery is a loan, and the entire situation is a living fantasy orchestrated by the older punter. SAUVAGE – Out Now DVD, Bluray and On Demand. for details
year-old Leo sells his body on the street for cash. Men arrive and go but he remains; stuck in the similar place and longing for love. Uncertain of what his future may carry, Leo hits the road. Sometimes impetuous, sometimes savage, sometimes tender but always with a pounding heart Leo is ready for change.
Camille Vidal-Naquet’s arresting debut is also one of silent introspection and disarming fragility. Starring BPM’s Félix Maritaud, whose uncooked and vulnerable core performance is nothing short of devastating.
